Inspiring Places

Here's our listing of places that visitors to the site have so far nominated as being inspirational for children and their families, recommending them for their ability to promote kids' sense of wonder and nurture their imagination, curiosity & creativity. To discover how to make a nomination of your own check out our make a recommendations page. Our search for the most inspirational places in the world has only just begun so the content on this section of the site will be added to as visitors post new nominations, so helping inspiringyourkids.com develop and grow. It's our intention to build a listing of 1,000 inspirational places for children, and then in 2008 to ask visitors to vote on their favourites. Both the person originally nominating the place that tops next years poll and a randomly chosen voter will win truly inspirational once in a lifetime family holidays. A third such prize will go to the visitor who makes the most interesting recommendation as judged by the inspiringyourkids.com team. Details of voting arrangements will be announced in early January 2008. Whether you make a recommendation or not we hope you find browsing through the ones made by other visitors enjoyable and informative.

Caves @ Phang Nga Bay, Thailand

Caves @ Phang Nga Bay, Thailand

Lying on your back in a kayak (canoe) may sound less than inspirational but believe me when you do it at this place it is sensational! Why? The reason is that as you do so the guides paddling these things steer the craft to glide into tight cave openings that take you into hidden lagoons covered by incredible chambers. My ten year old twin boys are hard to impress but they were genuinely awe struck and were delighted to hear that these 'hongs' (meaning room in Thai) were used by pirates to store their booty. If you're staying anywhere near Phuket I couldn't recommend this highly enough. Alice, mother of twin boys, Darwin, Australia

Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland

Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland

Maybe this is a bit of a cheek as I'm recommending somewhere on the same island as I live on, but if like me the Troubles in Northern Ireland put you off visiting this truly fantastic natural rock formation, trust me, go as soon as you can (the conflict is over now and its perfectly safe these days). A World Heritage Site, the Giant's Causeway consists of about 35,000 hexagonal basalt columns created by volcanic activity or giants depending on whether you like the scientific or mythological version of its origins. My wife and I took my grandchildren (aged 7, 10 and 12) for a long weekend so we could take in the Causeway and walk some of the beautiful North Antrim coast. We based ourselves in a little town called Bushmills and the kids still talk about the Giant's Causeway three years after our trip there. Shane, Grandfather, Cork, Ireland

Parc Asterix, Plailly, Nr Paris, France

Parc Asterix, Plailly, Nr Paris, France

This is a great alternative to Disneyland Paris and has the advantage of being authentically French rather than a piece of Uncle Sam grafted onto the Gallic (or should that be Gaulic?) landscape. Before my family went to Parc Asterix none of my kids had read the Asterix books featuring the members of an Ancient Rome defying village in Brittany. They loved the themed rides and the dolphin show and have since got into the books, of which I think there are about three dozen? It's close enough to day trip from Paris so when small legs tire of Notre Dame, the Louvre etc this is a winner. Jimmy, dad, Truro, Cornwall, England
